At Plane Handling Ltd, we recognise that our business activities impact upon the environment. As a company, we are committed to minimising those impacts and are continually working towards environmental best practice.
Part of this commitment includes the implementation of an environmental management programme, following the criteria for the International Standard ISO14001. This
programme is integrated into our existing Quality Management System.
Our most outstanding success has been in the recycling of waste produced by our cargo activities.
Since we began measuring the impact of our environmental efforts in 2002, we
have recycled almost 450 tonnes of plastic sheeting, which results from the breakdown of import freight from aircraft pallets. A substantial saving on waste going to landfill!
Any waste that cannot be recycled, and still has to be sent to landfill, is compacted first. This means that approximately 6 x 1100 litre "eurobins" worth of waste is reduced into one bag, again a substantial saving on the actual volume of waste going to landfill. Wood waste, mainly from broken wooden pallets, is collected by a recycling company, chipped and made into plywood for re-use by industries such as furniture manufacturers. This benefits the environment, because any wood waste sent to landfill releases methane gas as it decomposes, harming the atmosphere.
We also recycle redundant uniform items (both textiles and shoes/boots), which are collected and taken to a textile-sorting factory. Under secure conditions these items are separated into those suitable to be sent to third-world countries for re-use, or if not appropriate for this, cut into cloths for use by industry.
Our entire transport fleet runs on Euro 3, 4 and 5 engines. These are officially certified as "Reduced Pollution" as they have reduced emissions which helps to improve the air quality and reduce the negative effects on both the environment and health.
We participate in the BAA/LHR Clean Vehicle programme and have been awarded
their Platinum award, reflecting our ongoing efforts in this area.
We encourage our customers and tenants to join us in our efforts to recycle as much waste as possible, by installing paper recycling facilities in all our offices and collecting used printer cartridges. These are sent for recycling, with the money raised being donated to charity.
Since inception of
this scheme, we have made donations in excess of £1200 to charities such as the NSPCC, in addition to local charities in the London/Heathrow area,
all nominated by our staff.
Being a 24-hour a day, 7 day a week operation, we consume large amounts of precious energy.
As part of our environmental management programme we now monitor energy consumption and set targets for reduction.
When you entrust your business to us, you can rest assured that we will take as much care of the environment, as we will of your product.
